The Google Maps Platform API key is optional. Once you add it in the app settings, the address your customer enters in checkout is matched more precisely, so the list of pickup points matches where the customer actually lives more closely. We recommend it for stores with a high order volume.
The key does not add pickup point selection from a map. It only affects how accurate the list of nearest pickup points is - checkout looks exactly the same.
What it costs
To use Google Maps Platform (including the free tier), you need a Google account with a credit or debit card on file. Adding a card does not mean you will be charged: Google Maps Platform is free for up to 10,000 calls per month, and most stores stay within that limit.
Above the free tier, the Geocoding API costs around $5 USD per 1,000 calls. See Google’s pricing for current rates.
How to create the API key
- Go to the Keys & Credentials tab in Google Maps Platform. If you do not have a Google Cloud project yet, Google will ask you to create one and set up billing
- If a key was not created automatically, click + Create credentials and select API key
- Once the key is created, click its name to open the key page
- In the Name field, enter InPost – Tale Commerce so you can tell later what the key is for
- Do not set anything under Application restrictions. Website, IP address, or mobile app restrictions will block the key. If that is a concern, contact us
- In the API restrictions section, select Restrict key
- From the list, select Geocoding API. If it is not visible, enable it first
- Click Save at the bottom of the page
How to add the key to the app
- Open the InPost – Tale Commerce app in your Shopify admin
- Go to Settings and find the Integration with Google Maps Platform section
- Paste the key into the API Key field
- Click Save
We check the key against Google when you save. If something is wrong, you will see a message under the field and the key will not be saved. A valid key takes effect immediately.
You can remove the key at any time: clear the API Key field and save the settings.
Common error messages
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| The key is invalid, expired, or was not found | Check that the whole key was pasted, in the Keys & Credentials tab |
| The key should not have website, IP address, or application restrictions | Remove everything under Application restrictions (step 5 above) |
| Geocoding API is not on the allowed list | Add Geocoding API under API restrictions (steps 6 and 7 above) |
| The Geocoding API needs to be enabled | Enable the Geocoding API for your project |
| Billing must be enabled | Set up billing on your Google Cloud project. Google requires a card even on the free tier |
| The key exceeded its quota | Open Quotas, select Geocoding API, and raise or remove the v4 GeocodeAddress quota |
A key you just created, or a Geocoding API you just enabled, may not be visible on Google’s side yet. If you are sure everything is set up correctly, wait a few minutes and save the key again.
If the message does not match any of the above, or the problem keeps coming back, get in touch.
If the key stops working after it was saved - for example after you exceed the quota or billing is switched off - the app will show a message about the problem. Pickup points still appear in checkout, but it is worth opening your settings when you see it.
How to check that the key works
After adding or changing the key, place a test order and enter an address that has not been used in this store before. After a few minutes the traffic will show up in the Google Maps Platform metrics for your project.
If no pickup points appear in checkout at all, the cause lies elsewhere - see Pickup points are not showing in checkout.
