How to exclude certain products from shipping to pickup points?

Some products won’t fit in a parcel locker, or shouldn’t go to pickup points for other reasons. You can exclude them in three ways - with a weight limit, a product tag, or a separate Shopify shipping profile. The key difference: weight and shipping profiles work for individual variants, while a tag applies to the whole product.

Option 1: Weight limit (recommended)

In the InPost app, you can set a cart weight limit - shipping to pickup points will not be available if the total weight of the variants in the cart equals or exceeds the limit.

Weight is set per variant, so you can exclude only the variants that don’t suit pickup points. For example, a mirror sold in two sizes: the smaller one fits in a parcel locker, the larger one doesn’t. With a weight limit, buyers can still choose a pickup point for the smaller size, and only see other shipping options for the larger one.

If you enter real product weights, simply set the limit to the weight at which pickup point delivery should become unavailable.

If you’re not using the weight attribute in Shopify, you can repurpose it: assign a weight of e.g. 1 kg to the variants you want to exclude, and set the weight limit in the app to 1 kg. The remaining variants (with no weight) won’t count towards the limit. Just make sure weight isn’t used anywhere else - for example by other shipping rates or your shipping tool.

Option 2: Product tag

You can assign a tag to products, e.g. no-pickup-point-delivery, and then in the InPost app, check the Exclude products option and enter this tag. Shipping to pickup points will not be available if any product in the cart has this tag.

In Shopify, tags belong to the product, not to the variant - so the exclusion covers all variants of the product. In the mirror example, a tag would also exclude the small size, even though it fits in a parcel locker. A tag works well when the whole product, in every variant, can’t go to a pickup point.

Note: excluding by tag may slightly slow down the display of pickup points - another reason we recommend excluding by weight.

Option 3: Shopify shipping profile

You can also manage exclusions directly in Shopify’s shipping settings, without changing anything in the app. Create a separate shipping profile for products that can’t go to pickup points, and don’t add the InPost app to it.

1. Go to Settings → Shipping and Delivery
2. Under Shipping profiles, click Add custom profile, name it e.g. Oversized, and add the products to exclude - or just selected variants
3. In this profile, set up zones and rates, e.g. courier shipping - without the InPost app’s rate

Products in this profile won’t have pickup point delivery, and everything else stays the same. You can check which profiles have the app added in the InPost app, in a country’s settings, under Shipping profiles. Learn more about profiles in Shopify’s help center.

Watch out for carts with products from both profiles: Shopify then combines the rates from both profiles into one. It combines rates with the same name, and if there are none, it combines the cheapest rates under a shared “Shipping” name. Before going live, place a test order with such a cart and check what the buyer sees. If excluded products are often bought together with others, a weight limit will be simpler.

Provide an alternative shipping option

If an exclusion leaves the cart with no available shipping option at all, Shopify shows the customer a misleading message about an invalid address - and the order cannot be placed. Make sure excluded products have an alternative shipping option, e.g. courier shipping.
